Berkeley College, in partnership with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, will host “Leading with Feeling: Nine Strategies of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership,” on Friday, December 4, at 9 a.m., based on a book by Cary Cherniss, PhD, and Cornelia W. Roche, PsyD. The authors invite the public to discuss their book and learn about how emotional intelligence can help anyone become a more effective manager.
Cherniss is Director and Co-Chair of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations and Professor, Applied Psychology Emeritus, Rutgers University. Roche has performed management coaching in a variety of corporate settings and served as a consultant to schools, nonprofit entities and small businesses.
“In researching our book, we discovered that effective leaders employ nine strategies in using their emotional intelligence to deal with critical challenges and opportunities,” Cherniss said. “They don’t try to ignore or suppress their emotions. Rather, they manage and use emotions in ways that make them more effective leaders.”
He added that when leaders can manage their emotions and the emotions of others, they think more clearly, develop more creative and effective solutions, and motivate others to become more engaged in their work.
“Although emotional intelligence would seem to be more important for the softer side of leadership, it is also critical for strong leadership because emotions such as fear of failure and worry about others’ opinions can make it difficult for leaders to act decisively,” Roche said. “Emotional intelligence is thus vital for being both a strong and caring leader.”
